Taxonomy

Buprestis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Buprestoidea.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Geoffroy (1762), Scopoli (1763), Müller (1764), Schaeffer (1766), Linnaeus (1767), Drury (1770), Forster (1771), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1798); to Sternoxi by Latreille (1802); to Buprestidae by Scudder (1890), Scudder (1900); to Buprestinae by Weidlich (1987), Wappler (2003); and to Buprestina by Bellamy (2008), Bouchard et al. It was synonymized subjectively with Buprestis by Weidlich (1987), Bellamy (2008).
