Taxonomy
Ptychoparia was named by Corda (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm lMid Cm uMid Sepkoski's reference number: 464,472]. Its type is Conocephalites striatus. It is the type genus of Ptychopariinae.

It was reranked as Conocoryphe (Ptychoparia) by Meek (1873).

It was assigned to Conocoryphe by Meek (1873); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); to Ptychopariidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariinae by Henningsmoen (1952), Kordule (2006).

Kordule 2006Glabella tapering forward, with weakly rounded anterior; four pairs of glabellar furrows; cephalic border prominent, rather long (sag.); anterior border furrow deep; genal spine prominent, short, rapidly tapering, extending backward toward the third segment; genal caeca prominent on external surface of preglabellar field, preocular field of fixigenae and librigenal field of librigenae; pygidium with 5 to 6 axial rings and terminal piece; pleural lobes with distinct pleural and interpleural furrows; exoskeleton surface with finely tuberculate sculpture.
