Gryllotalpa was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Gryllotalpida, Gryllotalpinae, Gryllotalpini.
It was assigned to Gryllotalpinae by Zeuner (1939); to Gryllotalpidae by Handlirsch (1907), Theobald (1937), Harz (1969) and Carpenter (1992); and to Gryllotalpini by Storozhenko et al. (2015).
