Phaetonellus was named by Novak (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: O D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 421].

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Tropidocoryphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Eremiproetinae by Bault et al. (2021).
