Xiphogonium was named by Hawle and Corda (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1106]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Tropidocoryphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Eremiproetinae by Bault et al. (2021).
