Proteroscarabaeus was named by Grabau (1923). Its type is Proteroscarabaeus yeni.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Ping (1928); to Scarabaeidae by Grabau (1923), Nikritin (1977), Ponomarenko (1986), Hong and Wang (1990), Nikolajev (1992); to Pleocomidae by Krell (2000); and to Pleocominae by Nikolajev (1996), Nikolajev (2007).
