Probelus was named by Arnoldi (1977). It is the type genus of Probelini.

It was assigned to Eobelini by Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal (1999), Legalov (2009); and to Probelini by Legalov (2010), Bouchard et al. (2011), Legalov (2012), Gratshev and Legalov (2014), Legalov (2015).
