Cretonanophyes was named by Zherikhin (1977).

It was assigned to Nanophyeidae by Zherikhin (1977); to Baissorhynchinae by Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal (1999); to Baissorhynchini by Legalov (2012); to Baissorhynchina by Legalov (2009), Davis et al. (2013); and to Baissorhynchini by Legalov (2015).
