Homalophlebia was named by Brongniart (1894). Its type is Homalophlebia finoti. It is the type genus of Homalophlebidae.
It was assigned to Homalophlebidae by Handlirsch (1906); and to Homalophlebiidae by Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922), Carpenter (1992).
