Ernobius was named by Thomson (1859). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ernobiinae, Ernobiini.
It was assigned to Ernobiinae by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Ernobiini by Alekseev (2014), Zahradník and Háva (2014), Bukejs et al. (2021).
