Dindymene was named by Hawle and Corda (1847). Its type is Dindymene fridericiaugusti.

It was assigned to Dindymeninae by Owen (1981) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1991); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Encrinuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
