Homalonotus was named by König (1825) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-l S Ludl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 421,902].

It was reranked as Calymene (Homalonotus) by M'Coy (1849).

It was assigned to Calymene by M'Coy (1849); to Homalonotinae by Thomas (1977); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Homalonotidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
