Parayoungia was named by Chatterton and Perry (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: S (Ldov-u) - S (Wenl-l)]. Its type is Parayoungia eleyae.

It was assigned to Cheiruridae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).
