Taxonomy
Prionocheilus was named by Rouault (1847). Its type is Prionocheilus verneuili.

It was considered a nomen oblitum by Siveter (1977).

It was assigned to Pharostomatinae by Owen and Bruton (1980); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pharostomatidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
