Trimerocephalus was named by M'Coy (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1106]. It is not extant. Its type is Phacops (Trimerocephalus) mastophthalmus.

It was reranked as Phacops (Trimerocephalus) by Kayser (1889).

It was assigned to Asaphinae by M'Coy (1849); to Phacops by Kayser (1889); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phacopidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
