Aprionus was named by Kieffer (1894). It is extant. It is the type genus of Aprionini.
It was assigned to Campylomyzini by Felt (1911); to Micromyini by Perkovsky and Fedotova (2004); and to Aprionini by Fedotova and Perkovsky (2007), Gagné and Jaschhof (2014).
