Plagiura was named by Resser (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo-u Cm lMid Sepkoski's reference number: 80,379]. Its type is Ptychoparia cercops.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Palmer and Halley (1979); to Trilobita by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychopariidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
