Taxonomy
Heterotermes was named by Froggatt (1897). It is extant. It is the type genus of Heterotermitinae.
It was assigned to Rhinotermitidae by Carpenter (1992), Solórzano Kraemer (2007) and Engel (2008); and to Heterotermitinae by Froggatt (1897), Snyder (1949), Nel and Paicheler (1993), Fontes and Vulcano (1998) and Krishna et al. (2013).
