Liposcelis was named by Motschulsky (1852). It is extant. It is the type genus of Liposcelidae, Liposcelidinae.
It was assigned to Liposcelidae by Mockford (1969) and Carpenter (1992); to Liposcelidinae by Lienhard and Smithers (2002); and to Liposcelididae by Nel et al. (2004).
