Strigambitus was named by Palmer (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Sepkoski's reference number: 489]. Its type is Strigambitus transversus.

It was assigned to Trilobita by Sepkoski (2002); to Pterocephaliidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Pterocephaliinae by Hopkins (2011).
