Psocus abnormis was named by Hagen (1856). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber, Berendt collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in Poland.
It was recombined as Caecilius abnormis by Hagen (1866); it was recombined as Elipsocus abnormis by Hagen (1882), Enderlein (1911).
