Thylax was named by Hagen (1866). It is the type genus of Thylacinae.
It was assigned to Lepidopsocidae by Carpenter (1992); to Thylacellinae by Lienhard and Smithers (2002); and to Thylacinae by Enderlein (1911), Lienhard and Yoshizawa (2018).
