Sphaeropsocus was named by Hagen (1882). It is extant. It is the type genus of Sphaeropsocini.
It was assigned to Pachytroctinae by Enderlein (1911); to Pachytroctidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Sphaeropsocidae by Lienhard and Smithers (2002), Engel and Perkovsky (2006).
