Archaeatropos was named by Baz and Ortuño (2000). Its type is Archaeatropos alavensis. It is the type genus of Archaeatropidae.
It was assigned to Archaeatropidae by Baz and Ortuño (2000), Mockford et al. (2013), Cumming and Le Tirant (2021), Álvarez-Parra et al. (2022), Hakim et al. (2023); and to Empheriidae by Li et al. (2022), Hakim and Azar (2024).
