Ostenocaris was named by Arduini et al. (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen J Sine-l Sepkoski's reference number: 531,619]. It is not extant. Its type is Ostenocaris cypriformis. It is the type genus of Ostenocarididae.
It was assigned to Conchyliocarida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ostenocarididae by Schram (2014), Ehiro and Kato (2015).
