Cryptocaris was named by Schram (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 964]. Its type is Cryptocaris hootchi. It is the type genus of Cryptocarididae.
It was assigned to Monokonophora by Schram (1974); to Cryptocarididae by Schram et al. (1986); to Tesnusocarididae by Emerson and Schram (1991); and to Enantiopoda by Sepkoski (2002).
