Taxonomy
Dakoticancer was named by Rathbun (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 354,961]. Its type is Dakoticancer overana. It is the type genus of Dakoticancroideae, Dakoticancridae.

It was assigned to Dromiacea by Vega et al. (1995); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dakoticancridae by Rathbun (1917), Rathbun (1935), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Feldmann et al. (2017) and Luque et al. (2017).
