Felis yagouaroundi was named by Geoffroy (1803). It is extant.

It was recombined as Leopardus yagouaroundi by Hulbert and Pratt (1998); it was recombined as Puma yagouaroundi by Johnson et al. (2006); it was recombined as Herpailurus yagouaroundi by Severtzov (1858), Weigel (1961), Ewer (1973), Wilson and Reeder (1993), de Oliveira (1998), Breitenmoser and Breitenmoser (2017).
