Eurytium was named by Stimpson (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R]. It is extant. Its type is Cancer limosa.

It was assigned to Xanthidae by Rathbun (1918); to Panopeidae by Rathbun (1930); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Panopeinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017), Schweitzer et al. (2021).
