Heteractaea was named by Lockington (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Xanthidae by Rathbun (1918), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Actaeinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017), Schweitzer et al. (2021).
