Lissocarcinus was named by Adams and White (1848). It is extant.

It was assigned to Lupinae by Dana (1851); to Portunidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); to Caphyrinae by Karasawa et al. (2008) and Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Thalamitinae by Schweitzer et al. (2021).
