Carupa was named by Dana (1851). It is extant. It is the type genus of Carupinae.
It was assigned to Lupinae by Dana (1851); to Portunidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Carupinae by Karasawa et al. (2008), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2021).
