Taxonomy
Acanthoportunus buchanani was named by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2002). It is extant. Its type specimen is SDSNH 81055. Its type locality is Ocean Ranch, which is in an Uintan marine siltstone in the Santiago Formation of California. It is the type species of Acanthoportunus.

Feldmann 2002Carapace much wider than long including long lateral spines; anterolateral margin with six triangular spines; anterolateral corner with very long, attenuated lateral spine, which is itself ornamented with at least two triangular spines; protogastric, mesogastric, cardiac, and branchial regions ornamented with large, discrete swellings.
