Euthacanthus was named by Powrie (1864). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Euthacanthidae. It was considered unknown by Newman et al. (2011).
It was synonymized subjectively with Climatius by Hay (1902).
It was assigned to Diplacanthidae by Jordan (1963); to Climatiidae by Denison (1979); to Climatiiformes by Hanke and Wilson (2004); and to Euthacanthidae by Newman et al. (2011).

Newman et al. 2011 | Medium-sized , slender acanthodian with maximum length to depth ratio 5:1; no dentition; more than 20 narrow brachiostegal rays that do not extend over the whole gill chamber; fin spines thick-walled, relatively slender and straight with smooth grooves; no dermal plates fused to the pectoral fin spines; a pair of plate-like prepectoral spines; 4-6 pairs of prepelvic spines; posterior dorsal fin spine longer than the anterior dorsal fin spine; simple scapulocoracoid with a short robust shaft; scales ornamented with subparallel rounded ridges leading back from the anterior edge of the crown, with a slight convex base. |
