Protaxius was named by Beurlen (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: J u T Eo-m-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Callianassa isochela.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Axiidae by Kato et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2023).
