Sympherobius was named by Banks (1904). It is extant. It is the type genus of Sympherobiinae.
It was assigned to Hemerobiidae by Banks (1904); and to Sympherobiinae by Oswald (1993), Makarkin and Wedmann (2009), Garzón-Orduña et al. (2016), Perkovsky and Makarkin (2020).
