Taxonomy
Proptychoptera cretacea was named by Kalugina (1989). Its type specimen is PIN 3064/1298, a wing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Baissa (PIN collection 3064), which is in an Aptian lacustrine - large marl in the Zaza Formation of the Russian Federation.
It was recombined as Eoptychoptera cretacea by Lukashevich et al. (1998) and Lukashevich and Arillo (2016).
