Sialis was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Sialidae, Sialinae.
It was assigned to Megaloptera by Latreille (1802); to Sialidae by Nel (1991), Wichard (1997), Wichard (2002), Wichard and Engel (2006) and Engel and Grimaldi (2008); to Sialidinae by Liu et al. (2015); and to Sialinae by Martins et al. (2022).
