Rhizophtoma was named by Kirejtshuk and Azar (2009). Its type is Rhizophtoma elateroides. It is the type genus of Rhizophtominae.
It was assigned to Rhizophtominae by Kirejtshuk and Azar (2009) and Kirejtshuk (2013); and to Rhizophtomini by Peris and Delclòs (2015).
