Taxonomy
Megathentomum scudderi was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type specimen is USNM, a wing (wing fragment), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Mazon Creek, USNM Lacoe Collection, which is in a Westphalian D interdistributary bay mudstone in the Carbondale Formation of Illinois.
