Colosteus marshii was named by Cope (1869). Its type specimen is AMNH 6862, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Linton, which is in a Westphalian D mire/swamp coal in Ohio.
It was recombined as Ptyonius marshi by Cope (1875); it was recombined as Ptyonius marshii by Cope (1875) and Hay (1902).
