Hypermegethes northumbriae was named by Bolton (1916). Its type specimen is BMNH In 18524, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Phoenix Brickworks, Crawcrook (BMNH coll), which is in a Westphalian B delta plain shale in the United Kingdom.
