Mus laniger was named by Molina (1782). It is extant. It is the type species of Chinchilla.
It was recombined as Cricetus laniger by Geoffroy (1803); it was recombined as Chinchilla laniger by Gray (1828); it was recombined as Callomys laniger by d'Orbigny and Geoffroy (1830); it was recombined as Lagostomus laniger by Goldfuss (1832); it was recombined as Chinchilla lanigera by Bennett (1833).
