Lagotis cuvieri was named by Bennett (1833). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lagidium cuvieri by Giebel (1883); it was recombined as Viscaccia cuvieri by Thomas (1907); it was recombined as Lagidium viscacia cuvieri by Osgood (1943).
