Liomopterum minor was named by Aristov (2005). Its type specimen is PIN 1631/409, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Khal'mer-Yu coalfield, borehole KhK-993, depth 328 m, which is in a Kungurian terrestrial horizon in the Inta Formation of the Russian Federation.
