Taxonomy
Simia melanocephala was named by Humboldt (1811). It is extant. It is the type species of Cacajao, Uacaria, Cothurus, Neocothurus.
It was recombined as Pithecia melanocephala by Geoffroy (1812); it was recombined as Cothurus melanocephalus by Palmer (1899); it was recombined as Uacaria melanocephala by Flower and Lydekker (1899); it was recombined as Neocothurus melanocephalus by Palmer (1903); it was recombined as Cacajao melanocephalus by Lesson (1840), Barnett (2005).
