Isothea was named by Scudder (1893). It is the type genus of Isotheinae.
It was assigned to Rhynchitidae by Wickham (1912); to Isotheini by Scudder (1893), Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal (1999); and to Rhynchitini by Legalov (2013), Legalov (2015).
