Gomphaeschninae was named by Tillyard and Fraser (1940). It is extant. Its type is Gomphaeschna. It was considered monophyletic by Jarzembowski (1988).
It was reranked as the tribe Gomphaeschnini by Nel et al. (1994).
It was assigned to Aeshninae by Nel et al. (1994); to Aeshnidae by Wighton and Wilson (1986), Lewis (1988), Jarzembowski (1988), Nel and Martínez-Delclòs (1993), Nel et al. (1996), Ren and Guo (1996); and to Gomphaeschnidae by Bechly et al. (2001), Schädel and Lechner (2017), Jouault et al. (2023).
It was reranked as the tribe Gomphaeschnini by Nel et al. (1994).
