Hemizygopteridae was named by Zalessky (1955). Its type is Hemizygopteron.

It was synonymized subjectively with Permaeschnidae by Carpenter (1992).

It was assigned to Protanisoptera by Zalessky (1955); and to Ditaxineuroidea by Huguet et al. (2002) and Bechly (2007).

A. Huguet et al. 2002Bechly (1996, 1998, in press) indicated that there is no known autapomorphy of this family.We failed to find one in our phylogenetic analysis, because of the incomplete state of preservation of the available material.
