Phillipsia (Griffithides) bufo was named by Meek and Worthen (1870). It is the type species of Hesslerides.
It was recombined as Griffithides (Metaphillipsia) bufo by Chamberlain (1977); it was recombined as Hesslerides bufo by Brezinski (2000).
